Instead of the town of Leà Monde, a person's mind becomes the new play area for Jack to explore and investigate. One could even theorize that the actual mind jacking to be part of the gameplay. His way of extracting information would have then come from his ability of his to enter minds and finding the truth by himself. This idea revealed in FFXIV means that the person who would literally enter minds would have been "Jack", the "tracker". Vagrant Story 2 would become a direct sequel of this thematic idea that the first game brought. This is something that was already extremely prevalent in the first Vagrant Story, in which the real truth of what happened is open to interpretation and different depending on who you ask, just like the movie Rashomon. There are several truths happening in the mind of a single person, then. You navigate in a surreal landscape but the roadblocks happen to be the character's trauma, and coping mechanisms, literally preventing you from accessing further reaches of the character's mind, or even becoming distorted. The questline Matsuno wrote for FFXIV featured going into the mind of a character and learn some truths about someone's past. Not only that, if we crosscheck with what Matsuno wrote for FFXIV, then the story becomes very interesting with some already very fascinating development. This is the first time we're hearing something new about a sequel that has actual substance. However, the lead character wasn't going to be Ashley Riot but Jack, a "tracker", who can find target and extract information from them with startling accuracy. The PS3 store inevitably will close down sooner or later, and unless Square provides a remake or rerelease, the only way to play Vagrant Story will be to hunt down a potentially expensive copy on eBay.This puts it as a direct sequel of the first Vagrant Story, rather than a distant one. Vagrant Story has never been updated or remade since its original release, and though it's available as a PS1 classic on PS3, there have been reports that PS3 and Vita games are becoming unplayable. At the very least, versions of the other Ivalice games are already available on modern consoles or mobile devices. Modern updates are only half the issue, however. A remake for Vagrant Story with new graphics and a little hand-holding could help reestablish it as one of Square Enix's best properties. So far, Tactics Ogre Reborn appears to be accessible for newcomers without diluting the original's mechanics. A remake has a lot to offer, as the same complexity can also make it difficult for new players looking to experience the original. With Matsuno teasing that a Vagrant Story 2 could be in development, now is the perfect time for a remake or remaster.Īs an old-fashioned action RPG, Vagrant Story's complex and customizable combat would appeal to SRPG fans while also feeling fresh in Square's crowded release schedule. Combat is balanced between chaining attacks to deal extensive damage, and a Risk factor that functions similarly to fatigue and negatively impacts Ashley's abilities. While modern action RPGs can sometimes end up repetitive or button-mashy, Vagrant Story's combat retains the sophistication that defines the combat of all the Ivalice games. Though it takes place in the same world as Tactics, Vagrant Story is an action RPG. After the other Direct reveals, the Switch is starting to feel like the new home of SRPGs and farming sims. Just from Square Enix, Triangle Strategy released earlier this year, The Diofield Chronicle is releasing this month, and Square Enix's Nintendo Direct announcements confirmed remakes of the first three Front Mission games. Strategy games in general are seeing a surge with promising new titles like Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope. And it would be a welcome return, if Square Enix wasn't currently flooding the market with strategy RPGs. That being the case, the most obvious candidate to follow Tactics Ogre: Reborn in the remake factory would be Final Fantasy Tactics. Tactics Ogre is the spiritual predecessor to Final Fantasy Tactics, which itself is considered one of the best strategy RPGs ever made and a staple FF entry.
